Words mean everything


Each day, in every public school across America, students stand and have the opportunity to pledge their allegiance to the flag. Although the pledge is taught in early grades, no student is forced to make the pledge. Students are required to stand to show respect for the pledge, but can choose to stand silently. Most students I have witnessed say the pledge from rote, and are neither inspired nor moved by the words they speak.


The words of the Pledge are words of meaning and import. They represent the basic foundation of our nation’s purpose. Have you ever given any thought to the depth of the promise made each time the pledge is spoken? Each word was carefully chosen, and represents an aspect of patriotism and loyalty that was thought to be integral to our society.
